The many Glacier Hotel was built by the Great Northern Railway in 1914. At the time, this area had been called the “Swiss Alps of North America”, so the architect designed a “Swiss Chalet” style hotel.
Many Glacier Hotel sits on the shore of Swiftcurrent Lake. The setting could not be prettier.
The architect who designed the Glacier park Lodge in East Glacier worked as co-designer for this hotel, contributing many similarities in design.
I liked this large, central fireplace…..
And the stairs going up several more floors.
We enjoyed the afternoon sitting on our balcony overlooking the lake.
Then we had a wonderful steak dinner in the dining room to celebrate Fred’s birthday. No birthday cake…..we had some huckleberry ice cream instead. : ) By the way, thanks to everyone for all of the birthday wishes for Fred…….
After dinner, we went to a show at the hotel. This was a very moving, one man show of storytelling and folk music; bringing to life the Lewis and Clark expedition.
Staying at these old lodges has been a lot of fun, though you have to accept that the rooms will be small; the walls, thin; and the plumbing a bit old fashioned. Well worth it…….to step back into time to enjoy the history of the National Parks.
