Hallo Bay - It’s All About the Fishing

Aug 11th- We were eager to observe the bears fishing for salmon. Fred and I had watched these same bears digging for clams and grazing in the meadow, but fishing is a much more active sport.

Laura and Dave are posed here in front of one of the bears  in the background.  With anticipation, we watched………

And the bears watched……. The salmon would swim upstream in small groups, not a continuous stream, and the bears would watch and try to snag one.

 

There would be a lot of slashing around as the bears lunged for a fish. We quietly cheered them on.

They were not always successful with a catch.

But, when they were, it was awesome to watch…..

For the bears, especially at this time of the year, it is all about the calories. They are putting on weight to make it through the long winter’s hibernation.

They are not delicate eaters. We could hear the crunch, crunch as they ate the fish, bones and all.

How amazing it is to be this close and to watch these magnificent animals!
